Transforming Fleet Safety Management with a Scalable Cloud Platform

Explore how Spillard overhauled fleet safety management with a scalable cloud platform, enhancing efficiency and customer satisfaction while future-proofing its operations.

Industry:

Technology for construction, extraction, aggregate and transportation

Superior efficiency & scalability

thanks to cloud’s flexibility and automating workflows

Device agnostic design

makes the platform compatible with multiple device types from different manufacturers.

The challenge:

outdated fleet safety platform

Operating since 1992, Spillard Safety Systems has evolved into one of the UK’s largest suppliers of vehicle safety equipment to the construction, extraction, and transportation industries.

The company relied on a third-party platform built on increasingly outdated technologies. The legacy system lacked scalability, preventing Spillard from adapting to evolving business needs and expanding its services effectively.

Moreover, the platform’s limitations hindered the integration of new devices and reduced operational flexibility and efficiency.

As demands grew, the company needed to replace the old system with a solution capable of real-time tracking, live monitoring, and comprehensive reporting.

Analysing requirements & possible solutions

Spillard partnered with Internetum, a European IoT development agency, to devise a new solution. Together, the teams considered the following options:

#1: Retrofit the existing platform

The first option involved enhancing the existing platform by updating key modules. However, this approach proved to be inefficient and costly, as the core architecture lacked the necessary flexibility and scalability.

#2: Off-the-shelf fleet security solutions

The team evaluated several commercial fleet management software products. While these offered standard features, they lacked customisability and integration capabilities essential for diverse device ecosystems and the specific needs of Spillard’s clients.

#3: Build a bespoke cloud platform

The most promising approach was a bespoke cloud-based solution. Tailored to the company’s unique requirements, it offered the flexibility to integrate multiple device types, scalable infrastructure, and advanced analytics.

The winning solution:
a scalable fleet safety platform

Internetum’s team built a cutting-edge platform based on .NET technology and the Azure Cloud.

This new solution provides horizontal and vertical scalability, enabling the platform to handle increased workloads and adapt to future demands seamlessly.

Key features of the new platform include:

  • Device agnostic design

The platform supports devices from various manufacturers, including Howen and Teltonika, guaranteeing compatibility and flexibility for current and future integrations.

  • Driver behaviour analytics

Advanced algorithms let Spillard monitor driver performance and identify areas for optimisation in fuel efficiency, safety, and operational effectiveness.

  • Route processing and optimisation

The platform minimises travel times and fuel consumption across the fleet vehicle thanks to real-time route data analysis.

  • Live tracking and streaming

Spillard’s customers can monitor their vehicles in real-time, while live video feeds provide unparalleled situational awareness and enhance security.

  • Incident processing and analysis

The platform automatically captures and analyses critical events, offering actionable insights to improve safety protocols and operational procedures.

  • Business intelligence reporting

A customisable reporting suite provides detailed analytics, empowering Spillard’s management to make data-driven strategic decisions.

Results: fleet safety tooling that accommodates growing demand

By implementing the new platform, the company reaped significant benefits:

CAN Bus Data in Telematics:
a Practical Introduction

Telematics is taking modern logistics and fleet management by storm, and it’s easy to see why.  96% of companies using telematics surveyed by Teletrac Navman reported measurable savings, and almost half integrated AI-driven automation tools into their fleets. At the heart of this transformation is the Controller Area Network (CAN) Bus, the backbone of vehicle […]

What Agile Software Development Methodology Can Do For Your Next IT Project

Software project success rates are alarmingly low in today’s rapidly changing business landscape.  According to Zipdo’s report from 2023, 31% of software projects are cancelled before completion, while over half of them almost double their initial budget. Perhaps the most concerning fact is that only 16% of IT projects are completed on time and within […]
